Mobile Me and iPhone roll out not as smooth as Uncle Steve probably expected

Mr. MacGoog has been watching the iPhone and Mobile Me rollout closely and he must admit, it hasn’t gone that smoothly. So what hiccups did Mr. MacGoog notice? Let's just look at the list, shall we:

  1. The iPhone firmware became available before it’s schedule rollout through an online link from the Apple website. While Mr. MacGoog didn't have any issues downloading the new firmware or the installation, there were many reports of bricked iPhones since the activation servers were not available to activate the phones. This same activation server issues are what cased many delays at the AT$T and Apple stores today. Guess Mr. MacGoog got lucky on that one since he downloaded, installed, activated all within a matter of 10 minutes or so yesterday afternoon. Lucky indeed as there are even rumors that folks updating today with the official firmware release through iTunes cannot activate their phones.
  2. After installing the new firmware, many (including Mr. MacGoog) are reporting slower performance (especially when activating apps that require Mobile Me) and crashes (Mr. MacGoog had the pleasure of watching his phone reset all by itself). Let's hope Apple releases a quick fix as crashes and sluggish performance are what we come to expect from OTHER phones, not the iPhone. Mr. MacGoog can't help but wonder if these crashes are caused by these new apps and can report that the time his phone reboot, he was using an app that was requesting the current location. However, Mr. MacGoog can report that Google Mobile app is working flawlessly!
  3. Mobile Me was delayed from it’s Wednesday rollout until Friday. And even at that, it’s still not working well today. Extremely slow. Part of the rollout process was for .Mac users to install a Mobile Me patch. Which leads to the next point.
  4. Apple has already released a new version of the Mobile Me patch (1.1). The updated is said to  improve performance. Hmmm...Mr. MacGoog installed this update and updated a contact within Address Book and 10 minutes later, the change still hasn’t been reflected on Mr. MacGoog’s  iPhone. Mr. MacGoog suspects some serious server loads and that we won't see an increase in performance until all the new traffic begins to slow down.
So what does Mr. MacGoog have to say about this? Ya know, Mr. MacGoog is a very patient person and has to say that all these errors have made for some interesting news. Mr. MacGoog has really enjoyed tracking the process and even spent much of the night with Leo Laporte and the Twit Network. A big Mr. MacGoog tip ’o the hat to Leo and friends for their amazing coverage. It was a blast and Mr. MacGoog hated seeing Leo go off the air earlier today, but understands he needs his rest.

Finally, it's been 20 minutes and Mr. MacGoog’s contact still hasn't updated. The fun continues! However, Mr. MacGoog believes that if users continue to have too much fun, our love with Uncle Steve’s new phone firmware and Mobile Me service could start to wain. So what fun experiences have you had with this roll-out. Leave some comments and share the fun!
